The Government Legal Service for Northern Ireland (GLSNI) came into existence on 1 April 2007, bringing together legal staff working in a range of units in both the devolved and non-devolved sectors. The units participating in GLSNI at its formation were – the Departmental Solicitor’s Office; Crown Solicitor’s Office; the Compensation Agency; Land Registers Northern Ireland; the Belfast-based staff of the Serious Organised Crime Agency; and the Central Claims Unit of the Department for Regional Development. This created a critical mass of about 130 legal staff, giving new opportunities for more effective recruitment, career development and training.
The makeup of GLSNI has changed more recently with the Northern Ireland Law Commission being invited to join in 2011, while a movement of legal staff out of their respective organisations has resulted in the Compensation Agency and Central Claims Unit (DRD) no longer being represented within GLSNI. Each unit is represented on the GLSNI Management Board which meets regularly under the chairmanship of Mr Oswyn Paulin.
