Consultation on the First Programme of Law Reform
The Northern Ireland Law Commission has issued a Consultation Paper on its First Programme of Law Reform. The Paper provides information on the role of the Commission and its working methods, together with information on the criteria by which projects will be selected. A list of potential projects is set out for discussion.
This consultation process seeks views and advice on the proposals for the Commission’s First Programme (which will run for three years from January 2009) from the general public as well as from businesses and organisations interested in legal matters. The projects include areas of the law relating to: land ownership and conveyancing, bail, vulnerable witnesses in civil cases, multi-unit property, landlord and tenant, the environment and legal proceedings for persons in secure accommodation. It is stressed that the list of proposals set out in the Paper does not exclude any other topic that a respondent may wish the Commission to consider and other suggestions are welcomed.
The core aim of the Commission in drawing up this First Programme is to put in place as soon as possible a programme of law reform that has the potential, if government accepts the recommendations, to deliver real benefits to the community in Northern Ireland.
